It’s Safe Boating Week, a seasonal reminder for boaters across Indiana to brush up on safety practices before hitting the water.

At Main Channel, we’re proud to be part of your lake life adventures, and just as passionate about boating safety as we are about fun. Here are a few important safety reminders for the season…

1. Alcohol and Boating Don’t Mix

Boating under the influence is illegal and dangerous. Just like driving a car, operating a boat while impaired can lead to poor judgment, slower reaction times, and serious accidents. In Indiana, the legal limit for boaters is the same as for drivers: a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%. But it doesn’t take much sun, heat, or motion to amplify the effects of alcohol on the water.

Safety Tip: Designate a sober driver every time you head out.

2. Life Jackets Save Lives

You may be a strong swimmer, but unexpected conditions like waves, wind, or engine trouble can make staying afloat more difficult. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, over 80% of boating fatalities involve people who were not wearing a life jacket.

Make sure everyone on board has a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket—and wears it while underway. Children under 13 are required by Indiana law to wear one at all times on the boat.

3. Take a Boater Safety Course

Whether you’re a seasoned captain or a new boat owner, taking a boater education course is one of the best ways to ensure you’re operating safely and legally. Indiana law requires boaters born after December 31, 1986 to carry a valid boater education card to operate a motorboat.

Courses are available online or through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and they cover everything from navigation rules to emergency procedures.

4. Perform a Safety Check Before Every Ride

Before leaving the dock, take a few minutes to check your gear and vessel:

  • Is there enough fuel?
  • Are all navigation lights working?
  • Do you have a fire extinguisher and whistle or horn onboard?
  • Is your drain plug in?
  • Do you have enough life jackets for each person on board?

These quick checks can prevent bigger problems once you're out on the lake.

5. Respect the Water and Others On It

Northern Indiana’s lakes are busy in the summer, and courtesy goes a long way. Stay alert for other boaters, paddlers, and swimmers. Know the local no-wake zones and obey posted speed limits near shorelines and marinas. Keep music at a respectful volume and be mindful of your boat’s wake near docks, kayakers, and anchored vessels.
